back in the fall when i bought my canon xti, i carried my camera almost anywhere with unbridled enthusiasum to shoot the world. but as school and band picked up, i started carrying my camera less and less to places. i ended up not actually touching my camera for 5 months. because of all the procrastinating i’ve done free time i’ve had lately, my interest in photography has picked up again. when i look at my equipment though, i realize that i’m lacking in a bunch of areas. so here’s a list of the top 5 things i want to buy (when i get the money)

5 Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens for Canon EOS SLR Cameras

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens for Canon EOS SLR Cameras

right now i only have two lenses, the kit lens that came with my camera, which frankly sucks, and the ef 50mm f/1.8, which i absolutely love. i’m also borrowing two of my mom’s sigma lenses. one of them is a 70-300mm but it really sucks. i can’t stand the colors of the pictures that i take with the lens, all washed out.

4 Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 Image Stabilized USM SLR Lens for EOS Digital SLR’s

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 Image Stabilized USM SLR Lens for EOS Digital SLR\'s

as i said, i only have two lenses. my “walkaround” lens is the kit lens that sucks, so at some point i want to upgrade to something i can stick on and just leave on unless i’m looking for a specific look. i’ve read a ton of reviews of all different lenses and the consensus is that this one is the best bang for your buck.

3 Starving Student (No PC) Strobist Kit

Starving Student No PC Kit

Ever since I stumbled across the strobist website, i’ve been wanting to get into off-camera flash. the idea is that instead of using huge studio lights for lighting, you just take a simple, relatively cheap hot-shoe flash that is supposed to attach to the top of your camera and hook it up using cables/wireless and triggering it off of your camera to achieve the same effect as using effect as those expensive studio lights.

2 Canon BG-E3 Battery Grip for EOS Digital Rebel XT Camera

Canon BG-E3 Battery Grip for EOS Digital Rebel XT Camera

i love taking pictures in the portrait orientation, but i hate how awkward it is to do so. with this grip, problem solved. it has a vertical shutter button and all the other buttons to control aperature, shutter speed, etc.. it can also hold another battery so i can shoot for even longer. plus it makes the camera look much more uppity and expensive, so that’s always a plus.

1 Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash for Canon EOS Digital SLR Cameras

Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash for Canon EOS Digital SLR Cameras

ok, i know already have a flash listed, but this is different. i want to get to off camera flash, but first i need to get an on camera flash. this one is the best of the best as far as canon flashes and why skimp when it’s only about $100 more than the 430ex which is the lower end of the flashes.
